H.E. Mr. Suresh K. Reddy today presented his credentials to the Secretary General of ASEAN H.E. Mr. Le Luong Minh in a ceremony at the ASEAN Secretariat. Ambassador Reddy conveyed greetings of the External Affairs Minister of India H.E. Mrs. Sushma Swaraj to the Secretary General, which was warmly reciprocated. The Secretary General also accepted with pleasure the Indian External Affairs Minister’s invitation for the forthcoming Delhi Dialogue, scheduled for 11-12 March 2015.

Secretary General Minh described India as one of ASEAN’s most important and valued Dialogue Partners. He conveyed particular appreciation for India’s continued support to ASEAN Member States in their community building endeavour across all three pillars, i.e. political-security, economic and socio-cultural, through a wide range of collaborative projects in various sectors, including in agriculture, commerce, environment, science & technology, space, ICT, SMEs, tourism, human resource development and capacity building, people-to-people contacts etc. He sought enhanced engagement by India in the East Asia Summit process and other ASEAN-led regional dialogue mechanisms. He stressed the necessity of enhanced connectivity and early conclusion of negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement.

Ambassador Reddy reaffirmed India’s sincere commitment to its relationship with ASEAN. He further stated that it would be his mission to ensure effective implementation of the directive given by the Leaders of India and ASEAN Member States in the vision document, adopted at the 2012 Commemorative Summit in New Delhi, where the relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership.

Both Ambassador Reddy and Secretary General Minh agreed to work closely with ASEAN Member States to prepare a focused, action-oriented, and balanced Plan of Action for the 2016-21 period, which is to be adopted by the Leaders at the 13th ASEAN-India Summit in Malaysia later this year. 

H.E. Suresh K. Reddy is the first Ambassador to head the newly set up Indian Mission to ASEAN in Jakarta. Prior to this, he was India’s Ambassador to Iraq. He has previously served in different positions in Indian Missions in Islamabad, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, and Cairo. He had also established and headed the ASEAN Division in Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi during 2010-11.
